Today is the last day of January, which is usually a welcome time in the mid-Atlantic. We still have about two months before the first day of spring, but we are making progress to that goal. This year we have suffered through bitter cold, but last weekend was almost balmy. It is those "almost balmy" weekends that we love and I am hoping for a few more of them in the upcoming weeks.
We are discussing winter weather and balmy days today because we need to get outside and do some painting at Crest Avenue. The trim work around the front door, the overhang along the front of the house and, indeed, the front door all need to be painted. Rather, stripped, and painted. To accomplish the stripping part of this project, I recently found some nylon brushes that attach to an ordinary household drill that should work perfectly. Take a look.
As with everything these days, I ordered the brushes from Amazon and they showed up about three hours later. Incredible! They are called Nyalox Flap Brushes. The brushes arrived in this plastic bag inside of a mailer bag with this warning sticker attached. I wonder why we still use these plastic bags? I would have been just as pleased if the brushes had been dropped in the mailer bag on their own. Maybe these plastic bags help with keeping track of inventory. Or maybe, since these are sold in batches of three, it makes filling the orders easier. Who knows. I don't get too bent over these types of things. I just think if we could do away with these plastic bags and the warnings of possible suffocation to small children, it would be a good thing. That's all.
Back to our brushes. Here they are out of the packaging. There are three brushes altogether in three different colors. Blue is a fine 240 grit. Orange is a 120 medium grit. And grey is a coarse 80 grit. Supposedly, these brushes will last up to ten times longer than wire brushes. They will not rust, of course. The black plastic center disc is mounted on a one-quarter inch shaft which makes these an easy fit on your portable drill.
We have an issue of some peeling paint on the overhang and I thought these would do a good job of helping to remove that. I like the idea of using nylon bristle brushes over wire bristle brushes. It seems there will be less damage to the wood structure using rotating nylon brushes as opposed to rotating wire brushes. I guess we will see. So be sure to come back to see how this project turns out. We've also got a new handle and lockset for the front door that we will install after the front door is redone. So lot's going on at Crest Avenue and you don't want to miss a thing.
