It's Time to Start Decorating for Fall

Actually, the first day of fall was last Friday.  Although you would never know it here in the mid-Atlantic.  We have been in the 90's every day for the last week.  And to be quite honest with you, we are all pretty tired of it.  We are ready for fall.  The air conditioner at Crest Avenue has been running all week like we are in July.  I got up during the night to get something to drink and as I was walking by the wall vents on my way to the kitchen, I could feel cold air on my legs.  Rather unexpected for late September.  But, what can you do.  I'll tell you what you can do.  Go get some gourds and put together a fall centerpiece.  That is exactly what we did.

You can buy gourds already chosen for you in mesh bags at most any of the big box garden centers at this point.  But, if possible, go to a small local nursery and hand pick your gourds like we did.

They may be sold individually with prices that vary based on size and shape.  Or they may be sold by the pound.  Different nurseries have different configurations.  No matter how they sell, them, find a bowl from your inventory at home and keep a visual of that bowl in your mind while you are choosing the gourds.

We chose this beautiful ceramic with a vibrant orange painted bowl to use as our display.  Then start about arranging.  It may take a while until you get the gourds set to your liking.  Never fall for anyone who tells you, "oh I just threw that together".  First of all, nobody does that and secondly, nobody does that!  Once you are satisfied with your arrangement, set your bowl on the dining room table or on the fireplace mantel if yours is large enough to adequately fit your arrangement.  Also on a side table at the front entry or a hall table on the second floor.  Wherever it works best in your home.  Have fun!
