Wool Dryer Balls

I bought a new set of wool dryer balls.  I had a set of these in the clothes dryer at Crest Avenue, but I left them for the new owners.  I don't think I ever mentioned that the buyers of Crest Avenue were a young, professional couple.  That house is perfect for a young couple.  It was also affordable so it was a nice way for them to make their first real estate purchase.

I used these type dryer balls for years at Crest Avenue and I was pleased with how they worked.  They just sort of bounce around inside the dryer drum with the damp clothes and help keep the items separated so they dry faster.  Dryers consume a huge amount of energy so anything that can help bring down the drying cycle is a good thing.

These came two to a bag and I bought two bags, so I have a set of four.  The product description label says that these are "A Healthy, Chemical-Free Alternative to Dryer Sheets and PVC Dryer Balls", and that is certainly true.

These are the PVC Dryer Balls.  I cannot speak to how well these do or do not work.  I have not used them.  It is a personal preference of mine to use the all-natural wool dryer balls.  These PVC Dryer Balls may work just as well as the wool, but I would not use them.

On laundry day, I dropped the balls and the dryer sheets into a mesh bag and set off for the laundry center in my building.

I had a small load of dark clothes on this day.  Most times I do not fill the dryer completely.  I am doing laundry for one, and some of my clothing is sent out for cleaning, so I rarely have a full dryer unless I am doing sheets and towels and that sort of thing.  On this day it was sweatpants and jeans and a few other items.

I should explain the addition of the dryer sheet in the picture above.  I know these dryer balls are marketed as an alternative to dryer sheets and, indeed, they certainly can be.  But I still add a dryer sheet to the drum along with the dryer balls because the dryer sheet adds a nice fresh scent to my clothing.  I especially like these dryer sheets from Downey.  They are large - as you see on the box it says "Mega Sheet", and they have wrinkle guard.  I take my clothes out of the dryer before the cycle has ended and fold them right from the dryer thereby reducing the chance for wrinkling.  Even doing that there were times when the clothes looked a little wrinkled.  With the addition of the wool dryer balls and the Downey dryer sheet, this is no longer an issue.

I hope you will consider giving these a try in your dryer.  For only a few dollars of initial investment you may find that the drying cycle in your dryer is reduced leading to a reduction in your electric bill.  Wouldn't that be nice.
