First Class Travel for Pets

When Baxter travels with me, he requires certain requirements to be met.  Today we will go over some of the necessities we keep in stock for him on every road trip.

Baxter on a recent road trip, loving his first-class seat.
First and foremost, his seat.  He has had this since he was a puppy.  I purchased it from Brookstone. If you are interested in purchasing the same seat for your pet, click here to be taken to this specific item on their website.  As of the date of this blog post, these seats are on sale.  You will save $12.96 off the original price.  He loves this seat.  It lifts him up so he can see out the window.  He can feel the air from the air conditioner in the summer or heat in the winter.  It is securely fastened to the seat using the seat/shoulder belt so it is not wobbling around.  And he is secured in it with a tether which attaches to his collar and to the shoulder belt.  It is well worth the price.

Admittedly, I went a little overboard and opted to have his name embroidered on the front of the seat. This is by no means a necessity, but cute nonetheless.  This part of the seat which has his name is actually a cover for an internal bin which slides out and holds several items.

Here, the bin exposed from behind the name flap.  This is nicely sized so that you can keep a good many items stored away but accessed very quickly.

The first couple items we keep in stock are a bottle of water and paper bowls in case he gets thirsty. One quick recommendation.  If your car is not garaged, put a fresh bottle of water in the bin for each trip.  I don't like the idea of drinking from a plastic bottle that has been sitting in a car in direct sunlight for days or weeks.  Do chemicals from the plastic leach into the water in extreme temperatures?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  But why take the chance.  I bring a fresh bottle of water for myself on a road trip and a fresh bottle for Baxter.

You see here that these items fit into the plastic bin with ease.  There is actually plenty of room left for other items, so I added some additional things which are necessary to have on a road trip.

I added his leash, a little plastic container shaped like a bone which holds poop bags and an extra roll of poop bags.  This is a basic travel bin.  If you are taking a particularly long road trip, you might add a small container of food.  If you are traveling in the winter, a sweater or coat and, if your pet will wear them, a set of boots.  You can forget the boots with Baxter.  We have tried that several times and he is having no part of it.  But I will add a sweater for the winter month travels.  And also a small towel to dry off his feet if we stop for a bathroom break and it is raining or snowing.  If you have a large dog and you do not need a booster seat, then buy a plastic container from Walmart with a lid and fill it with the essentials.  You can place it on the floor in the back of the car on the passenger side When you stop, everything you need will be right there.
