The Snow Storm of the Century

Well, it may not have been the snow storm of the century, but it was pretty close.  There are varying measurements being reported but I can tell you with all certainty that we received 32 inches of snow at Dewey Street.  It started snowing around 2:00 PM on Friday and was still snowing at 11:00 PM on Saturday when I fell asleep.  The weather forecasters predicted we would receive at least 2 feet of snow.  It was actually closer to 3 feet.  Everything here is closed.  Federal Government offices, DC Government offices, schools, the courts, ... everything.  Temperatures remain at freezing or below so it is difficult for transportation crews to remove the snow.  We have had brilliant sunshine yesterday and today which does some good in melting the snow away.  However, the temperatures plummet during the night so the melting snow freezes as ice on the roadways.  It was 13 degrees at 7:21 this morning.  Below are some pictures of the storm.

We had a quick snow storm come through the area on Wednesday night which dropped about an inch of snow.  The snow in this picture is what was left from that system.  I put down ice melt before the snow started on Friday.

I covered the porch and all the way down the sidewalk.  In the end this had positively no effect.  The snow came too fast for the ice melt to do anything.

I had to run to the airport to pick up Steven who was returning from a week in Las Vegas.  We were not certain his flight would make it, but in the end it did.  That is the flight controller tower at National in the background.

Here, sitting in the cell phone lot at National Airport watching for the arrival of his flight on my iPhone.  The snow was coming down very heavily at this time and I was getting concerned about the condition of the roads when we left.  Finally he called and said they had landed but were waiting for a gate.  Then there was the wait for the bags.  Finally, he called and we drove around to the arrival gate to pick him up.

On the George Washington Parkway as we exited the airport.  The roads were completely covered with snow.

On the merge ramp from the George Washington Parkway to 395.  Not good.

On 395 making our way around the city.

We got home in all good time, considering the condition of the roads.  We backed the Commander into the driveway.  That is Chaka Khan sitting in the street in front of the house.

On Saturday morning, this was the view of Chaka Khan (Chaka Khan is my car in case you were wondering).

And this was the view of the deck on Saturday morning.

On Sunday morning, this was the view of Chaka Khan.  You can barely see her.

And this was the view of the deck.  You can see when you compare the above photos how much more snow we got as the hours went by.

This was quite a storm.  I knew it would be substantial when it was forecast to come from the south. When winter storms come from the south, they are always significant.  When they come directly from the west, once they hit the Blue Ridge, they fall apart and we get nothing.  We are trapped inside again today.  It is 25 degrees as I write.  I do not think we will get much above freezing again today.  However, temperatures will be in the forties later this week with rain.  That will likely clear things up.
