Our Trip to Savannah, Part I

The trip to Savannah last week was wonderful.  We had a great time touring The Landings on Skidaway Island.  We met some very nice people.  I'll share some of our trip in today's post.

We had an 8:00 AM flight from Washington National to Atlanta.  Then Atlanta to Savannah/Hilton Head.  We flew Delta which has a hub in Atlanta, so there were many choices of flights and departure times.

The airport at Savannah/Hilton Head is really beautiful.  Lots of wonderful, natural light in the atrium.

I thought this was a really cute idea.  They decorated for fall inside the airport.  You don't see that at airports.  Not any airport that I can recall.

It was a short walk to the escalator which took us down one level to baggage claim and to the rental car company.

I think there are two baggage claim areas.  The airport is small, so it is easy to maneuver.  It is immaculately clean and the airport employees are extremely courteous.

We got our bags and then made our way to Hertz.  We were Hertz Gold and had a reservation but the process there was not as easy and carefree as advertised on television.  We ended up with this SUV. It was from Dodge.  I was surprised at how comfortable it was and extremely efficient.  We used $11.00 worth of gas.  That was amazing.

Here, the car packed, we were ready to make our way to The Landings for our tour.

On our way to meet with the realtor, we had a little time to burn, so we stopped in the shopping center on the island and got a bottle of water and something to eat.  We made our way around the square and found the Savannah Sommelier.  We had to go in.  A very nice store and the guy who owns and runs it was very friendly.  He is a long time resident of The Landings and was happy to share his experiences with us.

On our tour, we visited five properties and we were shown all the clubhouses and golf courses and facilities that are available to residents.  This is just one of the clubhouses.  Just beautiful.

Lots of water features.  This fountain was in one of the lagoons across from a clubhouse.

There were several marinas.  This one was the one we left from for our boat tour of the island.  I will share that with you tomorrow.

The sky and the water were perfect shades of blue for our visit.  Cloudless days with warm temperatures and no humidity.

This house, located on Barnwell Lane, was my favorite as we were checking out the houses online that we wanted to see.

It was built in 1980 and has not had any renovations.  So it is a bit dated.  But the price is right. It will likely not be available when we make our move, but if it was, I would definitely consider buying.

I love the double door entrance and the windows on either side of the door.  When you enter from the main entrance, there is a long wall and the living room is behind that wall in the back of the house. That was a popular design back in the 70's and 80's.  The house my childhood best friend lived in had the living room in the rear of the house.  I like that design still today.  The long wall separating the entrance from the living room is wonderful in that it is essentially a long foyer which gives you an opportunity to greet your guests without interrupting those in the living room.  A classic design which still works today.  I would not change this design.

Our favorite of all the houses we looked at was this one on Whisky Bottom Road.  I know it looks small from this photo, but nothing could be further from the truth.  It has been renovated and it is wonderful.  Lots of wide open space that is perfect for entertaining.  The kitchen has been redone and is spectacular.  Of course, the price is considerably higher, but we would not have to do anything other than apply a fresh coat of paint.  It is move-in ready.

During our stay, The Landings placed us in a house on the island which was available for people like us who come to take a tour and decide whether or not this is a community where they would like to live.  They have what they refer to as "discovery packages."  That is what we bought.  A "discovery package."  This house was located on Topsail Court and was just perfect.  Actually, this would have been the perfect house to buy if it had been on the market.  It is not.  It is owned by someone who lives elsewhere and rents it short or long term, depending on the needs of the renters.

In the back, off the deck, was this beautiful lagoon.

And another shot of the lagoon behind our house.  It was so peaceful and quiet to sit out on the deck. We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this house.

Tomorrow I will share with you the second half of our trip.  I think you will enjoy hearing more about The Landings.  It would be a great place to have a second home and perfect for retirement, which is our intended purpose for checking it out.
