I could not let the blooming period for our beautiful Christmas cactus go by without sharing a couple of pictures with you of the splendor asplundh resplendentness (in case you are wondering, I concocted that phrase as my descriptor for something which is above and beyond all magnificence) of this plant. It is as lush and beautiful and showy this year as any year I can remember.
It has a very tropical look. It looks like a plant you would expect to see in the Beverly Hill Hotel. The beautiful green and pink colors remind me of that hotel.
Here you see the beautiful loden green of the main building with the all familiar pink color in the background on another section of the building.
Here, the grand entrance to the Beverly Hills Hotel. See the arrangement in the center on the crystal table? That looks to be possibly pink snapdragon with a host of other greenery for a magnificent arrangement. If you ever have the opportunity to stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel, take it. And be certain to stop in the Polo Lounge if for nothing other than a cocktail.
I think our beautiful Christmas cactus would fit right in at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I love the combination of pink and green.
A little background on these plants.
In Brazil, the genus is referred to as Flor de Maio (May flower), reflecting the period in which they flower in the Southern Hemisphere. In the wild they either grow on trees or on rocks and can form sizeable shrubs. They are leafless. The stems are composed of segments. In most species the segments are strongly flattened and made up of a central core with two or more wings.
So, if you do not have a Christmas cactus, you should look into buying one. I think you will be glad you did. And quickly, they require very little maintenance. The one above is set outside in the spring and stays there until November with very little attention. It gets watered like all the other plants on the deck. They are very hardy.
