Someone Stole the Siding!

When I arrived home yesterday and let Baxter outside, I noticed the siding was missing from the back of the house.  I guess it wasn't a total surprise.  We are having the siding replaced.  It was replaced on the front last year.  Now we are having the job completed on the rear of the house.

The guys started by removing the existing siding and the sheathing.  But they did not remove insulation.  Why, you ask?  Because there was no insulation.  These older homes were built without insulation in the walls.  It was the same at Crest Avenue (for those who remember my previous blog, www.welcometocrestavenue.blogspot.com.)  When we replaced the siding there we installed insulation which made a HUGE difference in the heating and cooling bills.

The square pole contraption you see will hold the scaffolding for the guys to stand on while they are working.

Another picture of the whole of the back side of the house with no siding.  The two windows on the second floor will also be replaced. I think the schedule calls for the window replacement on Thursday of this week.

And here is a picture of the side of the house.  This window will also be replaced.  In the attic space above the window you can see insulation which was blown in at some point over the years.  That helped somewhat, but we were still losing warm air in the winter and cool air in the summer through the walls.

To the far right in this picture is the chimney stack.  We are fortunate to have two fireplaces at Dewey Street.  One in the living room and another in the basement.  The one in the living room is a wood burning fireplace and the one in the basement was converted to gas a few years ago.  A warm, cozy fire on a fall or winter evening is heaven.

Be sure to check back over the coming weeks to see the progress on this job.
